Eric Gold
East End, London |
|
Thank you Eric Gold, known to many as Eric McKenzie, East End, London,
for sending the following memories of the time he spent in Niddrie in the
1960s.
Eric moved from
Dumbiedykes, when the houses there were being demolished, to
Craigmillar in 1961, then to new housing named Niddrie House before
going to sea in 1963.

Niddrie House Scheme
"We moved
from Dumbiedykes to 5 Harewood Road, Craigmillar in 1961, then moved to a
scheme called Niddrie House."

Niddrie House
"The Niddrie
House scheme was named after the famous Wauchope family's Niddrie House
that we used to play in.
Niddrie House was a huge
mansion, owned by the Wauchope family. Hence the names Wauchope
Terrace and Place."

The Bogeyman
"Niddrie
House was a derelict house when we moved into Craigmillar in April 1961
when our shrine Arthur Street was demolished.
We would play in Niddrie House
but my mum was frightened in case I hurt myself as the building was
derelict. She told me that the bogyman had flitted from Arthur
street to Niddrie House.
She said she met the bogyman
outside the Whithoose pub and he liked a drink in the afternoon and caught
young lads in the mansion when he came home.
She put the fear in to me so I
never went near the old Niddrie house again (ha ha ha ha)"

Update 1
Andrew Longmuir added this message to the EdinPhoto guestbook:
"I found
Peter Stenhouse two months ago, after 50 years.
He is fine, and as far as I know,
so are Martha and Jimmy Burstow. Sadly,
I was at James McKay's funeral about two years
ago.

Thank you to John Lawson who replied:
Neighbours
"I lived at 101 Niddrie Mains Terrace
from 1957 to 1976. It is almost directly opposite 50 Niddrie
Mains Terrace (where Liz Brownlie lived).
I can’t recall the Brownlies living there but
I do remember the rest of the tenants in the
stair. They were, you look at the
building:
-
bottom left: Berwick
-
middle left-: Mathieson
-
top left:
Shaw (before them, it was Black)
-
bottom right:
Brownlie?
-
middle right:
Simpson
-
top right-:
Morrison.
Mrs Morrison was the first person in the
street to get a colour TV. That was around 1970.
Grandson, Eddie,
was a friend of mine. (I never got to
watch the TV though). "

Roberta posted a message in
the EdinPhoto guestbook, asking what he described as a long shot, going
back to 1954: |
|
Nora Graham
"Does anyone
remember my mum. Nora Graham? She worked in what she refers to
as 'the rubber mill' in 1954.
She would have been
about age 21 at the time.
My mum had three
brothers:
- Jimmy Graham,
- George Graham
- Lawrence
Graham"
Friends and Neighbours
"I remember Mrs
Morrison lived upstairs from us at Niddrie, and I remember playing
with a girl called Maggie who was a couple of years younger than me.
The only strong
memory that I have of Niddrie are of going for my gran's brown scone
and a quarter of butter. That was her treat."
Craigmillar School
"I went to
Craigmillar Primary School, usually
through the fence in the shared back gardens.
The fence railing were loose!"
Move from Niddrie
"I lived at 6 Hay
Drive, Niddrie with her until I was aged seven in 1965. Then
we moved to Gracemount, then to Granton where I
attended Craigmuir Primary School and then
Ainslie Park High School. We left
Edinburgh when i was
twelve or thirteen."

Niddrie Mains Drive
"I was born in Niddrie Mains in
1944. I believe that the address was
61 Niddrie Mains Drive. I remember that
it was a 3-storey tenement-type
building. My 2 younger sisters
Margaret (1946) and June (1948) were also born there.
I don't
know when my parents moved there. My
older sister, Alice,
was born in 1938, but I don’t know
whether she was born there or not.
She passed on on in 2012 in
California.
My Dad and Mom
"My dad,
Robert, was in the RAF at
the time. When he came home
from the RAF, he went to work in the Rubber
Mill. He died in 1982.
My Mom
was the cook in
the Manhattan restaurant on Princes street for many years.
She died in 2002."
The Wauchope
Estate
"I
recall the Wauchope estate.
I was forbidden to go near it, but I did
venture over there."
Move to Saughton then to
Canada
"I went to
Broomhouse primary School, then we moved
in 1952 from Niddrie to
80 Calder Road, Saughton, Edinburgh,
across the road from Saughton Prison. I
went to Pentland Secondary before
emigrating to Canada in 1957 at the
age of 12.
Do you remember me or
any of my Family?
"I'd love to
hear from anyone that knew any of us."
