No Recollections?

"I am quite surprised that nobody has left any recollections of James Gillespie's school on the EdinPhoto web site.

All my sisters  went there, though none of them enjoyed it!"

Phyl Carruthers née Allan, Belford, Northumberland, England:  August 15, 2008

Now that Phyl has added the first comment about James Gillespie's school, perhaps others will email me with their own memories of the school, then I can add them to this page on the web site.

Question

Visit by Pupils from Munich to Gillespie's School

1954

"In 1954, some Munich School pupils visited James Gillespie School, where Davina Briggs was a pupil.  Now, 60 years later, she sings in the Gareleton Singers, Haddington, who are coordinating a visit by the Nymphenburger Kantatenchor, Munich from June 12-16, 2014

We are trying to find the name of the Munich School involved in 1954 to see if any of the German pupils still live there and could re-establish this link.

The Council archives and local media have not yielded anything. Are you aware of any photos of this visit in your archive?

Thank you for your help."

Reply to Ian?

I don't have any photos of the visit that Ian, mentions above,  in my archive.  But perhaps somebody else might be able to provide the name of the school that Ian asks about.

If you think you can help to answer the question that Ian asks, please email me, then I'll pass on Ian's email address to you, so that you'll be able to send a message direct to him.

1943-53

"I attended James Gillespie’s High School for girls from 1943-1953 and I loved it.

My sister, Marion Beven (née Archibald)  attended Gillespie’s from 1942-1953.  She was ‘Dux’ in her class in 1950.  ie. top of her class.

The girls that  I remember in my class would all now be in their 70s but I can still recall some names:

Catrina Gowan,

Elaine Cochrane,

 Anne Whitehouse

Florence Purdy.

I married and came to Canada in 1966.

I became a Registered Nurse and have a university degree in Anthropology  so attending James

Gillespie’s school did not do me any harm although If I had “ hit the books” more I may have done better!

If anyone remembers me I would love to hear from them.

I am a grandmother of two wonderful children who are very proud of their grannie’s Scottish background."
