Thank you to George Smith, British Columbia, Canada, formerly Edinburgh,
for the following recollections:
"I have memories: of brickworks at
Hailes Quarry, the flooded quarry itself and a 'hermit' reputed to live in
a cave which was under the Union Canal there. This latter tale is probably
a schoolboy fantasy."
George Smith sent me a follow-up email [Apr
04] saying:
"Reading Malcolm Cant's 'The
Villages of Edinburgh' I found a reference to the ' hermits cave' at
Hailes Quarry that I mentioned in my recollections. It seems that it was
in fact some sort of tunnel which penetrated below the Union Canal."
