Thank you to Eileen McIvor for telling me that she had just found the EdinPhoto site and had used it to discover the name of the dance hall where she and her husband had spent many happy hours in their 'courting days.  It was 'The Plaza'.

The School Door

"While exploring the EdinPhoto site, I clicked on Edinburgh Castle and was interested to read about someone's father having been to school in Edinburgh Castle.  My mother and at least two of her sisters were at school in the Castle.

At the age of about 9 years, when on a visit to Edinburgh Castle my Mother showed me the door they went through to get into the school.

This was up in a corner, close to the entrance to the Banqueting HallThe Crown Square and the Hospital Green was where they played.

I am thrilled that my memory has served me well, and that someone else has confirmed the location of that school door. The last time I went there, it was a museum. I had not been aware that the school was upstairs until now."

My Grandfather

"My grandfather was a Barrack Sergeant Major in the Army Service Corps, and had moved back to Scotland from Aldershot about 1900.

The family lived at 1, Castle Terrace at the time of the 1901 census, until grandfather was discharged at retirement age, which is when they moved out to the Ashley Terrace area of the city."
