Closed and Decaying

The Whitehouse Pub, a B-listed art deco pub on Niddrie Mains Road, Craigmillar.  It was built in 1936.

However, despite changing hands several times in recent years, it has been closed for the past five years.  it was badly damaged in a fire in 2005 and has since  been  decaying.  It has been placed on the Civic Trust 'buildings at risk' register because of its condition.

Restoration?

Developers, PARK, have plans for Craigmillar, extending over the next fifteen years.  These include building more housing, shops, a supermarket and a community high school.  They would like to develop the Whitehouse as a Café-bar or restaurant.

Edinburgh City Council is seeking permission to serve a repair order on the building's current owner.  If the repairs are not carried out, and if the council is unable to arrange for the building to be acquired on the open market, they intend to serve a compulsory purchase order on it, to ensure that it can be repaired and put back into use, and no longer detract from the area.
