Leith Schools

Possible Closures

February 2006

About a quarter of primary schools throughout Edinburgh are expected to close over the next few years as a result of falling school numbers.

Councillors are exploring the possibility of reducing the  number of primary schools in Leith from five to three by:

-  closing Bonnington Primary School (210 pupils).

-  amalgamating Fort (81 pupils) and Victoria Primary Schools (117 pupils).

-  merging Abbeyhill with Leith Walk or Lorne Primary Schools.

These proposals have met with opposition.  They will be considered by a committee of councillors, union officials, school representatives and parents.
