Lothian Road

 Festival Square

Plans for Development

September 2004

Festival Square is an open square in front of the Sheraton Hotel in Lothian Road.  The square is occasionally used for open-air continental markets, but for much of the time it is empty.

The Edinburgh Film Festival and architect Richard Murphy, on 30 Aug 04, announced draft plans to build a £20m spaceship-style Filmhouse cinema complex in the square.  This would become the venue for the Edinburgh Film Festival.

These plans have been welcomed by the local press, and the Edinburgh actor and patron of the Film Festival, Sean Connery has spoken in favour of it.  The Council leader, Donald Anderson and the General Manager of the Sheraton Hotel have spoken against the idea of building in Festival Square.

Plans are currently at the feasibility stage.  It is too early yet to say whether or not they are likely to gain planning approval.

Ice Rink?

2006

Following the success of Edinburgh's Capital Christmas programme in 2005, which included the arrival of Santa at Festival Square, Edinburgh City Council are considering the possibility of creating an ice rink at Festival Square to be open for the Christmas and New Year celebrations in November 2006.

An alternative site being considered for the ice rink is Charlotte Square.

The ice rink beside the Scott Monument, Edinburgh Wheel and Christmas Market in East Princes Street Gardens has proved popular in recent winters.
