Corporation Buildings and Leith Hospital

Sheriff Brae, Leith

Thank you to John Stewart, Livingston, West Lothian, formerly of Leith, for allowing me to reproduce this photo.

John wrote:

"This photo is of the old Corporation Buildings in Sheriff Brae.  It was taken in 1982, prior to demolition.

Leith Hospital is in the rear with its boiler house on its left.  I used to play in the 'coppie' as a child."

I asked John where the word 'coppie' came from.

He replied

"The word `coppie` was a colloquial term used by the locals meaning Corporation Buildings.

The playing area was the enclosed area between the 3 blocks that made up the `coppie`"
