Preparing for the Trams

This photo was taken shortly before a storm on the afternoon of June 16, 2009, as Princes Street was being prepared for tram lines to be laid.  The photo was taken from near the junction of Princes Street and Frederick  Street, looking to the SW, with the storm clouds gathering over the West End of Princes Street.

Edinburgh Castle can be see on Castle hill on the skyline towards the left of the photo.  The tower of St John's Church at the West End of Princes Street can be seen close to the right-hand edge of the photo.

The first lines had been laid, about half a mile to the west in Princes Street a couple of days before this photo was taken.

Princes Street Closed

Princes Street is currently (at June 2009) closed to all traffic in both directions between Waverley Bridge and the West End.

The pavement on the north side of the street, beside the shops remains open, but the pavement on the south side of the street, beside Princes Street Gardens, has been closed to pedestrians.

The street is expected to remain closed until November 2009.
