Princes Street

Location

This view looks to the west along Princes Street from the pavement  on the north side of the street, close to the junction with Hanover Street, opposite the floral clock in West Princes Street Gardens.

The trees in West Princes Street Gardens can be seen on the left-hand side of this photo.  Part of Edinburgh Castle is just visible behind the trees.

Road Works

The whole street, and the pavement along the south side of the street from the West End to the Scott Monument is currently (at July 2009) taken up by road works to lay the tracks for the new Edinburgh trams.  The trams are due to start operating in 2011 - or more likely, 2012.

UPDATE September 2011:  Latest estimated date for running to start, 2014.

The pavement along the north side of Princes Street beside the shops is still open to pedestrians, as can be seen in this photo.

Princes Street is due to re-open to traffic and pedestrians in late-November, in time for Edinburgh's Winter Festival, 2009.
