The View

This view looks to the west along Princes Street, towards St John's church at the West End.  Edinburgh Castle on Castle Hill can be seen on the extreme-left of this photo.

Tram Works

Here, work has begun to dig up Princes Street after faults were found in the original installation work carried out in 2009 to install the tram lines.

This remedial work is expected to last from September to late-November 2011, then from early-January to July 2012.  The break of a few weeks in the middle is to ensure that the work will not have any impact on Edinburgh's Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The cost of the work is to be met by  the consortium headed by Bilfinger Berger.  The City of Edinburgh now estimate, at October 2011, that tram running is likely to commence in 2014.  (Trams were originally scheduled to start running in 2011.)

There were no workers to be seen on the tram lines in Princes Street when I took this photo.
