1942 Thank you to British Pathé Ltd for allowing me to reproduce this image from the start of a film clip showing a parade of 2,000 marching along Princes Street at the start Allies Week in Edinburgh, 1942. The photo was taken from the National Gallery at the Foot of The Mound, where the Lord Provost took the salute. This view looks to the east along Princes Street towards the Scott Monument. The monuments on Calton Hill can be seen in the background. |

I was there! "Your clip reminded me that I was there! I remember standing somewhere on the north side at the east end of Princes Street and watching the parade go by. I seem to remember being a bit critical of the marching style of some nations as they seemed a bit sloppy compared with the British army. My prejudice was probably based on my experiences as the son of an RSM." French and Poles "I think the contingent wearing cloaks were French Spahis and the men swinging their arms across their bodies were, I think, Poles but no doubt someone will be able to identify the various styles with more confidence."
