High Street

May 2008

The photograph above was taken from close to the Tron kirk, looking west up the High Street towards St Giles Church.  The 'crown' tower of St Giles can be seen near the centre of the photo.

August 2010

Here is a photo of the same box taken during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, 2010, when there were lots of street entertainers and visitors around:

Blue lights were normally fixed to the top of police boxes so that the police on duty on the street knew when they should return to the box to receive a message.

However this police box had a remote 'sky lantern' on the corner of North Bridge and the Royal Mile, so that it could be seen from further afield.

This 'sky lantern' is still attached to the wall.  It must be a long time since it was last used.
