Heriot Mount

This photograph shows one of the council's vehicles that used to be seen around the streets clearing the drains.  This one is at the corner of Heriot Mount and Dumbiedykes Road.

A street-sweeper's cart can be seen a short distance further down the street in the gutter.

This view looks to the west along Heriot Mount. The large steps at the end of the street lead into Holyrood Park.

Thank you to Andy Duff, Australia, who wrote:

"I was very interested in photo of truck cleaning the grate.  We used to call them sivers in our time.

The young girl in photo could be my wife  (Jean Dalgleish, now Jean Duff) as a  13 year old wee lass.

Boy, does it bring back memories. It's sad there is not many photos of St Leonards Hill were I lived, but a great site full of memories.  Keep up the good work.

Thanks for  your comments Andy.  I'm still coming across more photos of Dumbiedykes.  I'll see if I can find any of St Leonard's Hill.  -  Peter Stubbs

The large photograph above was one of several dozen taken in 1959 by Adam H Malcolm in the Dumbiedykes area of Edinburgh.  These photographs were taken shortly before the houses were demolished.  Adam H Malcolm donated these photographs to the Edinburgh City Libraries in the 1960s and they can now be found in the Library's Edinburgh Room Collection.
