This is one of many new road signs that appeared on roads in the New Town of Edinburgh in 2005 as  the Central Edinburgh Traffic Management scheme was introduced.

This junction has caused some confusion.  Not visible in this photograph are:

-  traffic lights controlling all four entries to the roundabout.  This is common on many larger roundabouts, but on one of this size the lights are very close together.

-  'no u-turn' signs on approaches to the roundabout from the north and south.  This is the only roundabout I know of that does not allow 'u-turns'.
