Hutton's Shoe Repair Shop
Thank you to Graham Hutton for sending me the
photos above of his family's shoe repair shop. The shop has stood on
the corner of Elgin Terrace and Edina Street since 1923.
Photos 1
and 2.
These photos both show the exterior of the shop.
The signage can be easily matched in these two photos taken about 30 years
apart.
Photos 3
and
4.
These two interior views both include Ian Hutton who
now (in 2012) manages the shop. The shop was previously run by his
father, and before that by his grandfather.

The Hutton Family
"Charles
Hutton had this shop from 1923 to 1952.
Margaret Hutton,
Charles' wife continued to work in the shop - until she was 83
years old!
William Hutton,
Charles' son was the owner of the shop from 1952 to 1986. His other
interest was horses.
Ian Hutton,
Charles' grandson has run the shop since 1986."

"The shop has hardly
changed."
"People in their 80s come into the shop when
visiting Scotland, and
say, "The shop has hardly changed."
Apart
from the key cutting signs inside, that's pretty
much true. I'm
sure people will recognise the shop, inside and
out, and recognise the
very few people that have worked there."
Master Cobblers
"There have only been 3 master cobblers there
in 90 years - my brother Ian, my father William and my Grandfather
Charles.
My Gran
worked there, 5 days a week, chatting to customers
for ages until she was in her 80s. My 79
year old mother still goes in to help, one day a
week and takes shoes in and
gives them out during my brother's
holidays."
