Canongate Church
History
The Canongate is part of Edinburgh's Royal Mile.
The Royal Mile leads from Holyrood Palace, beside Holyrood Abbey (established by King David I in 1128 and dedicated to the Holy Rood)
up the ridge to Edinburgh castle.
The Canongate (named after the Canon's 'Gait' or 'Walk') was originally a separate borough from Edinburgh, though the two were only a mile apart. The boundary between the two boroughs was half way up the Royal Mile at the Netherbow.
