Princes Street from the Rutland Hotel

Trams, Cars and Fountain

This scene looks along Princes street to the east towards Calton Hill from the the West End.  The photo appears to have been taken from the Rutland Hotel.

A long line of trams and cars, heading west, waits at the policeman on points duty at the foot of Lothian Road.

Thank you to Barbara Hiddleston for telling me:

"In  this photo, used as a tramway island, is the Sinclair Fountain, erected in 1859 by Catherine Sinclair for the use of the horses that pulled the cabs, the working men and dogs.

Its fate was decided at a Tramway Sub-committee Meeting, held around 17th December, 1925.  The fountain was removed in early 1926."

The Postcard

This postcard was posted in Edinburgh on April 7, 1931, but it has no publisher's name or date printed on it.   The photo would have been taken in 1926 or earlier.  (See above.)

Questions

Publisher and Date

1.  Do you recognise the publisher, perhaps from the style of card and / or  numbering in the lower right corner.

2. Can suggest an approximate date of the photo, perhaps from the transport in this scene?

If so, please email me.

Thank you.    -  Peter Stubbs:  March 28, 2008

Thank you to Barbara Hiddleston who wrote:

"My husband reckons that the car in front could  possibly be a 1923  Morris Cowley."
