Scottish & Newcastle Breweries occupied large areas of land on either side of the Fountainbridge road when this photograph was taken.

Fountainbridge is close to the Union Canal, once an area with lots of industry including the large North British Rubber Works. 

Now most of the industry has left.  The yard in the photograph above, on the north side of Fountainbridge has now closed, and the main brewery complex is running down, due to close in spring 2005.

Update  -  July 2005

The brewery finally closed on 31 June 2005.  It is expected that the eight acre site will be sold for development, at the end of six months' decommissioning which is due to 1 July 2005.
