The Tunnels

Here, Lothian Region Water & Drainage Dept was installing new drainage deep underground close to where the Edinburgh International Conference Centre now stands in Morrison Street.

Kitted in boots, hard hat and overalls, I descended to the tunnel and my camera bag was lowered down the shaft by crane.

The tunnels were being blasted, drilled then dug out.  They extended for 300 meters underground.  The work was being carried out 12 hours a day, 6 days a week and was expected to continue until early 1992.

The Worker

Here the worker doesn't have a lot of room to work, as he kneels in the water with his tools.

Concrete was being applied to seal all the joints in the pipes, and as it set it gave off a lot of heat into the tunnel.
