Leith Academy

1928-29

The Photograph

Thank you to Bryan Gourlay for sending me this photograph of a class of seven or eight year olds at Leith Academy in 1928-29.

Bryan's mother attended Leith Academy from 1927 until 1937.

The Photographer

This  photo was taken by J R Coltart, 8 Dalmenny Street, Leith.   The caption below the photo reads:

"Patronised by HM the Queen."

However, the last queen to have been on the throne was Queen Victoria who died in 1901, and the earliest record that I can find of J R Coltart's business in the Edinburgh & Leith Trade Directories  is 1909.

"My mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Leith.  She had:

 an older brother, David,

an older sister Dorothy

a younger sister Margaret

She was born in Leith in 1921 and attended Leith Academy, leaving at the age of 13.  She was probably there the same time as Bryan Gourlay's mother.   She may be in this photo:

Question

Does anyone know who the children are in the photo?  I would be very grateful if anyone could help with any of the names, or if anybody has any other photos of the students of Leith Academy."

I've send an email to Brian Gourlay asking him if he knows if his mother remembered Elizabeth (Betty) Leith or any of her family.

If you recognise anybody in this photo, or would like to send any other comments to Dianne, please email me, then I'll pass on your message to her.

Thank you.
