"This milk cart looks different from most I have seen on the  EdinPhoto EdinPhoto site.

See, it was a milkwoman with a young lass as her helpmate.  I took this photo in 1959 in the Comely Bank area of Edinburgh."

Milk Delivery Carts

"At one time, all milk delivery carts looked like the one in this photo taken by  Al Lorentzen.

St Cuthbert's later removed the roof and its supports and continued with flat-bed carts until they were discontinued in the mid-1980s.

It looks like a Ford Popular or Prefect in the background of Al's photo."

Milkwoman

"Al made comment (in 'Recollections 1' above) about there being a being a female milkman in this photo:

I doubt that very much.  I certainly never heard of any.    The person on the cart is probably a milk boy/girl, and I'm doubtful that the lady on the pavement is a milk woman.  She is not carrying any bottles, empty or full, probably.  She is likely to be  just someone passing.

Milk Carts

Al also commented that he had not seen that type of car,t but I am sure the one that delivered to Broughton Road was that covered style.

I think that the covered carts are converted from the original delivery carts for grocery deliveries which my dad worked on as a cart laddie back in 1920s."

Learmonth Avenue

"It was great to see Al Lorentzen’s photo of the Store milk cart in Comely Bank.

I was brought up round the corner.  The photo was taken in Learmonth Avenue, looking towards Comely Bank Road.

In the background is Gillies the chemist, McPherson the fruiterer and a hairdressers that I can’t remember the name of.

Behind him would have been:

-   MacKenzie’s grocers shop

-  Scott’s sweetie shop

-  one or two more that I can’t bring to mind.
