Chauffeur and Family

"Here is a photo of my grandfather.  He was a chauffeur for John Menzies. The car (and his family) were accommodated in Canning Street Lane."

My mother also worked for MenziesShe told me how she made up the newsvendor tray for the Waverley Station sequence in Hitchcock’s film, 'The 39 Steps'."

"I've checked my Culshaw & Horrobin Encyclopedia, and I think that the picture with the chauffeur standing outside the car may be of a 'Siddeley-Deasy', made by a company which eventually became part of Armstrong-Siddeley.

Here is a picture of a very similar convertible taken from the Veteran Car Club of Australia (Queensland) Inc web site."

"This car is indeed a cca 1913 Siddeley Deasy 18'24 Landaulette open drive limousine with Edinburgh registration S 2673. The car registrations ’bible’ Newall, has no data available for early Edinburgh Borough Council cars so cannot help in accurate dating.

The car has gas main-beam lights, electric side-lamps and a shortish bonnet so the model is probably the 4 cylinder 3,300cc.

The Builder

Interesting company history: this vehicle was built by the Vickers 'Wolseley' organization which had just parted with Herbert Austin.

The company Company was started in 1906 by Captain Henry Deasy who then left the company 1908 and was replaced by JD Siddeley, from Wolseley. It became Siddeley Deasy in 1913 and then became Armstrong Siddeley, 1919 to 1960.
