The Terminus

This view looks to the west along Henderson Row.  The large building on the left is the former tram depot that also housed the motor for the winding gear for Edinburgh's first cable trams that ran down Dundas Street and Howe Street.

In the 1960s, this building became a garage for police cars.

In the 1990s, the building was converted to an insurance company office.  It has a plaque on the front wall, commemorating the time when it was used by the tramway company.

The Route

This route used to be a private service for the staff of Standard Life who wished to travel between the company's offices in Edinbrugh.  It has now become route 61 operated by MacTours, a subsidiary  of  Lothian Buses, but is still well patronised by Standard Life staff.

Standard LIfe's largest offices in Edinburgh are all on or close to this route.  They are at Lothian Road, The Exchange, Brandon Terrace and the east end of George Street.

The Bus

The bus still includes Standard Life branding:

"I like having Standard Life on my side.  I like Standard Life."
