Thank you to Kenneth Williamson, who has contributed
memories and photos to the EdinPhoto web site, for sending me this
photograph of himself as a child.

I asked Kenneth if he
remembered the name of the shop, and he replied:
Train Shop
"I
was told that the name of the shop was Stanley Royal, but I can't
confirm that.
My granny lived in Montague Street,
and I remember that the shop was round the corner.
Perhaps one of your readers can
confirm the name of the shop."

Railways
Kenneth is still interested in railways. Here is a recent
photo that I took of him, speaking to members of the
Cockburn Association during their visit to the old Granton Gas
Works Station in 2011:

It didn't take long to get replies to Kenneth Williamson's
question (above) about the train shop.

"The chap who owned the train
shop was, indeed, Stan Royal. He had white hair and wore
glasses. I used to stare longingly into the window on my way
home from the New Vic every Saturday morning."
Hornig's Butcher
"The train shop
was in South Clark Street, almost opposite Hornig's the butcher
near the bottom of Lutton Place. There was a long queue
outside Hornig's every Saturday, waiting to get its famous black
pudding."

"The name and
location (near Montague Street) give a hint that this was in fact
Royle's Model Shop. It is well remembered by myself as the
source of aeroplane model kits in the WWII years.
He did sell railway models but thy
became very scarce during the war."

I’m sure he also sold Meccano

Model Shop
"I found out that the name of the shop
was The Model Shop, 82 South Clerk Street, Edinburgh. It was
owned by Frank Royale. It was, I believe, near the Salisbury
cinema."

George Smith also wrote again. George wrote:

"I seem to have
got the spelling of the name wrong, but overall it seems to be
agreed that we are all writing about the same shop."

Spelling
In fact several contributors have spelt Frank Royle's name in
different ways.
So I checked the Edinburgh & Leith Post Office Directories (for
1950-51 and 1961-63) . Both these directories include this
entry:
|
82 South Clerk Street
Frank Royle
The Model Shop |
