The photograph above was taken from the top of an open-top bus on a fine summer evening in July 2009.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery at 1 Queen Street, Edinburgh opened in 1889 as the first purpose-built National Portrait Gallery in the world.

The gallery was designed by R Rowand Anderson, and was donated to the nation by J R Findlay, the owner of the Scotsman newspaper.

The photograph above shows part of the frontage of the building, immediately above the main entrance in Queen Street.

The gallery is currently closed for refurbishment work, due to be completed in 2011.
