Raeburn House Hotel

Location

Raeburn House Hotel is on the north side of Raeburn Place, at the SE corner of Edinburgh Academy sports fields.  The sports fields are used for cricket and rugby.

History

This is one of three single villas that were built here around 1832, on the very edge of Edinburgh.  The other two were demolished to make way for Victorian tenements.  Raeburn House Hotel was formerly Somerset Cottage.

The Raeburn House Hotel web site appears to have been last updated in September 2006.  The hotel was still open then, as a 1-star hotel with seven rooms.  The web site includes a photograph of the hotel, with chairs and tables in the front garden.

Incidentally, this web site describes the hotel as having been constructed in 1850 and renovated in 2001.

The Future

Festival Inns run both the Edinburgh Academy Cricket Club clubhouse and the adjacent Raeburn House Hotel.

They sought approval, in 2002, for the present clubhouse to be demolished and replaced by a new clubhouse and squash courts, and for an extension to Raeburn House Hotel to be built to the rear of the hotel.

Approval was refused in 2002, then granted in 2004.  To date, the hotel has closed and I see little evidence of any work having begun on any extension.
