Where is it?

This is one of a large collection of photos taken by Robert Blomfield  in Edinburgh between 1956 and 1967.  Robert's brother, John is in the process of scanning and cataloguing the photos.

He'd like to discover where this photo was taken.  If you recognise the location, please email me, then I'll pass on the news to John.

Thank you

Thank you to John Blomfield, who sent me the photos taken by his brother, Robert, for writing again and adding:

'One Man Band'

"The 'One Man Band' in this photo is likely to be John Cordona,  He performed at that time.  I also have another photograph of him.  It's titled 'Tollcross'."

Tollcross?

"After seeing this photo of John Cordona

and reading John Blomfield's comment about having a photo of John Cordona entitled 'Tollcross', I suspect that this photo would have been taken fairly close to there.

Riego Street?

I think it may have been taken in Riego Street (the old one!) looking out towards the tenements at the foot of Lauriston Place.  The cars in the background would be coming down the High Riggs, and waiting to turn down towards Tollcross.

The corner of the building you can see was where 'Luggie' (he was a Mr. Lugton, but he was never called that) the bookie used to stand.

The opposite corner, which is out of shot, was where the Labour Exchange was.

Again, it's a long time since Reigo Street existed, so I may be totally wrong, but hopefully one of your other correspondents will agree, or disagree."

"Hi.  What a lovely photo.  This photo was indeed taken in Riego Street.  We lived in the first floor flat above the hairdressers that you can see in the photo at No.13.  The entrance to our stair is in between the hairdressers and Mrs Turner's shop.

Riego Street was a cobbled street and was safe to play in, despite being in such a busy area.  On one side of the street, there were:

-  Swanneys yard

-  Labour Exchange .

At the end of the street,  just before you turned into the High Riggs, there were

-  SMT garage

hardware shop

hairdressers

bookie."

Leaving Riego Street

"We were all moved out mid-1960s to make way for a new ring road that never happened!   We were re-housed in the new concrete jungle estates of West Granton."

"The photo was taken in Reigo Street, Tollcross.  Swannie's Yard is to the right of the busker guy.

My Granny Kate Russell lived at No.12, Reigo Street..   I remember that the hairdressers there had  an auld veteran barber who sat you on a high chair and used the ‘bowl‘ to get your fringe right.

Reigo street used to be an  L-shape  and had  the SMT Garage at the elbow of the 'L'.  Swannie's Yard and the Gonk Club were at the High Riggs End of the street.  Lipton's was on the corner at the other end.  None of this stopped the football in the street.

All the buildings to the right of our busker were condemned circa 1966/7 and everybody  we knew moved out to  the concrete creations of the 1960s on Edinburgh's outskirts.

The folk who lived there then, and who are now long gone would be turning in the ground at the prices of Tollcross property now!

I went to Tollcross School, and then Tynecastle,  and I have very fond memories of a tough but happy childhood in Tollcross."
