Forth Road Bridge

under construction

Construction

Thank you to Bob Cowe for allowing me to reproduce the photograph above, taken in 1962, showing him on the partially completed bridge at the age of 19.

The bridge was officially opened by the Queen two years later, on September 4, 1964

"A friend of my Father worked on constructing the Forth Road Bridge.  One Sunday afternoon he managed to take me on a tour to the top of the bridge.

I recall walking all the way up the catwalk to the very top.  What what happened to Health & Safety?

I think the workers from Brunton Wire mill, who manufactured the wire, were being shown around the site at ground level.  I assume he took the opportunity to smuggle me in."
