Dunfermline Bandstand

Andrew Carnegie

This plaque is presented by Mrs Carnegie, the wife of Andrew Carnegie,  on her first visit to Dunfermline.

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919) was born in poor to a poor Scottish family in Dunfermline.  He emigrated to USA where he made his fortunes as an industrialist, becoming perhaps the richest man in the world.

He believed that the rich had a moral obligation to give away their fortunes.

He donated over $56 million to enable more than 2,500 public libraries to be built throughout the English-speaking world.
