plaque is presented by Mrs Carnegie, the wife of Andrew Carnegie, on
her first visit to Dunfermline.
(1835-1919) was born in poor to a poor Scottish
family in Dunfermline. He emigrated to USA where he made his
fortunes as an industrialist, becoming perhaps the richest man in the
believed that the rich had a moral obligation to give away their fortunes.
He donated over $56 million to enable more than 2,500 public
libraries to be built throughout the English-speaking world.
