Torchlight Procession

Calton Hill

The start of Edinburgh's New Year Celebrations is celebrated by a Torchlight Procession from The Royal Mile via The Mound, Princes Street and Waterloo Place to the top of Calton Hill where there are floodlit monuments, fireworks and a bonfire.

Here we look down from Calton Hill towards Princes Street and the clock tower of the Balmoral Hotel as the procession makes its way along Princes Street past the National Galleries, Scott Monument, Edinburgh Wheel and Helter Skelter and the Balmoral Hotel.

More torches were beginning to arrive at Calton Hill when this photo was taken at just before 7.35pm*.  Most of the torch bearers had stopped, but one was still moving during the long time exposure.

* The clock on the tower of the Balmoral Hotel, formerly the North British Railway Hotel is, by tradition always set about 3 minutes fast, so that passengers don't miss thier trains!
