Portobello from the Pier

The View

This view from Portobello Pier looks to the south-east, across a busy Portobello Beach, towards the Promenade that runs from Portobello to Joppa.

The Postcard

This card must have been published by Valentines in 1902 or later, as it has a divided back, allowing both address and message to be written on the back of the card.  It was posted from Portobello to Ipswich, Suffolk, England in 1906.

As well as writing the brief message on the front of the card, the sender also wrote the following on the back of the card:

"Thanks for the ppc (picture post card) sent from Yarmouth. 

I am staying up in Scotland.  Have been here three weeks.  It's a ripping place."

The number on this card is 35841, indicating that the card uses a negative from 1901.  This same negative was used for an earlier card with undivided back posted in 1902:
