Portobello

Marine Gardens, Portobello, were created in 1909 using many of the buildings that had formed the Scottish National Exhibition at Saughton Park in 1908.

The postcard above is unusual in being a real photograph. 

Many of the postcards of the Scottish National Exhibition and of Portobello's Marine Gardens were artists' impressions, like the two below:

This view looks towards the north-west, with the Island of Inchkeith, near Leith and a steamer in the Firth of Forth in the background.

This card was posted from Edinbrugh to Ayr on 9 July 1909 with the message:

"I have got so much rain since I came here that my features are all but washed away.
