VALENTINE - 1940s
"Aerial" Postcards
I have
other aerial photos by Valentine.
Search for D117, D119, D123 on this page to find them.
But this is
the only one that is described as "AERIAL". The numbering does
not fit in with the normal Valentine numbering series, which extends
from A1 to A9999 in the 'A' series used in the 1930s and 1940s.
The note on the back of this card reads:

VALENTINE - 1940s to
1950s *
* From around mid-1940s for cards
with 'Valentine's' printed in normal script.
From around early 1950s for
cards with 'Valentine's' printed in italics script
Valentine's
WITH ADDRESS
Valentine & Sons Ltd., Dundee
and London
2
HALF-GLOBES
and a 'V'
* Most of these cards appear to have been
published in the 1940s and 1950s, but a few have a "1d STAMP"
message in the stamp box, so these may be from the late 1930s.
The postage rate for postcards changed from 1d to 2d on 1 May 1940.
There were many variations in style of card:
VALENTINE:
- 'double lined' letters (grey)
- 'double lined' letters (brown)
- italic letters (black)
- italic letters (brown)
LOGO (2
HALF-GLOBES
and a 'V'):
- 'FAMOUS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD' through the
logo
- No lettering through the logo
STAMP BOX:
- '1d STAMP if with only sender's name and
address and 5 words conventional greeting
(followed by letter B, C, D or G in lower right corer).
- empty stamp box apart from the letter L, M,
N, O or P in lower right corner, or numbers 38-1, 39-1 or 39-2 in
upper left or lower right corner.
(What do these letters and numbers indicate?)
The logo on these cards has
either the word 'THROUGHOUT'
passing through the globes or no wording accompanying
the globes, rather than the slogan
