Signature on an Oil Painting

This Horsburgh signature above appears on one of this pair of portraits, both dated 1901:

I have been shown several Horsburgh paintings.
All were painted between 1862 and 1901.

All are signed similarly.  e.g. 'HORSBURGH EDIN 1862'.
Sometimes 'HORSBURGH' is written 'Horsburgh'.
Sometimes 'EDIN' is written 'EDINR' or 'Edin'.

Is there a clue from the signature, or from the paintings themselves, to indicate whether each of the painting is the work of John Horsburgh (1835-1924) or of his son, John A Horsburgh (b.1862)?
