Colin Campbell

Hampshire, England

Thank you to Colin Campbell for sending me the two photos above.

Colin wrote

Around 1944

"These photos might stir a few memories. They were taken around 1944 when I was about ten yeas old.

Both photos were taken at the foot of the Abbey Church steps which led down to the hall.

I'd love to hear from anyone in either of these photos

I think the pack was Edinburgh and Waverly 134th Wolf Pack, but I'm open to correction."

"This photo was also taken at Abbey Church steps.

I think the band was the brainwave of Ted Lancashire, father of Bobby Lancashire, drums.  We rehearsed in Mr Lancashire's house at 15 Dalgety Avenue.

Ted Lancashire managed the Norton Football Club and is mentioned in a local book written about Beggs Buildings called 'The Wee World' by Billy Hunter.

Most of the band grew up in Dalgety Avenue.  As I remember, they were:"

"Bertie McCall became a famous footballer, playing for Norton Football Club and, I think, Leith Athletic at Old Meadowbank before the Speedway."

Colin Campbell,  who sent me the photos at the top of this page, has retained his interest in music and orchestras.

He was one of the musicians in this Cub Band, around 1944:

Around 1960

About 15 years later, he was playing tenor sax in the  Pete Seaton Orchestra at the Palais de Dance, Edinburgh:

Big Band at The Palais de Dance, Fountainbridge  -  1963 ©

Over the next few years, until he left Edinburgh in 1964, Colin went on to play with several other orchestras in Edinburgh.

Today

Now, in 2012,  he is playing with an orchestra in Hampshire:

The Royal Marine Association Concert Orchestra

comprising mainly ex-Royal Marine musicians."
