 William Lees  -  Cartes de Visite

William Rees had studios at several addresses in Portobello from 1892 until 1925.  He was also listed in the trade directory with a studio at 131 Lothian Road in 1915.

I have not seen any reference to his studio at 10 East Richmond Street in any of the trade directories, but I have seen two of his cartes de visite bearing this address.  When might this studio have operated?  The style of mount suggests to me that they may date from around the 1890s

Valarie Harding who sent these photographs to me writes:

"The portraits are of unidentified relatives of mine, perhaps Lawrence or Smith surnames."

William Lees' studio at East Richmond Street appears to have a simple backdrop and little furnishing.

Even with so few props, the photographer does not appear to have composed the photograph very carefully.  He seems to have paid more attention when he was composing the photograph of the lady below.
