Valentine 'Book Toy'

The Story of the Railway Engine

Valentine & Sons

Valentine & Sons Ltd were better known for their postcards, but they also published a number of other items including small books in the early 1900s, and some 'book toys' possibly published around the 1930s.  Here is one of them.

The 'Book Toy'

Nancy from New York, USA, the owner of a copy of this book, 'The Story of the Railway Engine' tells me:

- This book measures 13 ins x 8 ins (so is much larger than most Valentine books for children).

-  It is No B608 in the Valentine 'Book Toy' series.

- The wheels spin, and on the front cover, there is also a connecting rod that moves.

Nancy, New York:  March 25, 2009

Published when?

Nancy would like to know more about when this book was published and its value now.

The style of the 4-2-0 engine on this illustration suggests to me that the book might have been published around the 1920s.

This list of branches for Valentine & Sons given in the book may also provide a clue as to when this 'book toy' might have been produced.

'Valentine & Sons, Ltd, Dundee & London
Branches - Cape Town, Melbourne, Toronto, etc.'
